Licensing Service For Android Applications

Licensing Service For Android Applications

Google will be releasing a better way to combat Android Application piracy. I have quoted the post below from the Android Blog and so take a read. If your an Android developer then this will be worth looking into for you.

In my conversations with Android developers, I often hear that you’d like better protection against unauthorized use of your applications. So today, I’m pleased to announce the release of a licensing service for applications in Android Market.

This simple and free service provides a secure mechanism to manage access to all Android Market paid applications targeting Android 1.5 or higher. At run time, with the inclusion of a set of libraries provided by us, your application can query the Android Market licensing server to determine the license status of your users. It returns information on whether your users are authorized to use the app based on stored sales records.

This licensing service operating real time over the network provides more flexibility in choosing license-enforcement strategies, and a more secure approach in protecting your applications from unauthorized use, than copy protection.

The licensing service is available now; our plan is for it to replace the current Android Market copy-protection mechanism over the next few months. I encourage you to check out the Licensing Your Applications section of our Developer Guide and the Android Market Help Center to learn how you can take advantage of this new service immediately.

Sky+ Remote Control App Comes to Android (UK)

Sky+ Remote Control App Comes to Android (UK)

An application for all of our UK readers. Sky who has millions of television subscribers has brought their Sky+ application to Android. The application itself serves as a remote control at the forefront but has the ability to deliver so much more. After logging in with your Sky account, you can browse the entire list of programming and set it to record for you while you’re on the go. They have both a search feature and they have categorised it by genre as well.

The application itself is free, but you will need a Sky subscription if you want to use it but you wouldn’t be interested otherwise. You can create a Sky.com account for your subscription which you can then link you app to after you’ve downloaded it.

You can scan the QR code below to download the application.

Clipper

Clipper is the ultimate clipboard manager for your phone. Keep track of your clipboard history: anything you copy will be available for viewing, editing and pasting – be more productive using this tool!

Tested: 1.6 & 2.1

Price: Free

Download:

Screenshots:

We Like:

  • Simplicity.
  • Import, Export.

We Dislike:

  • Lag (Occasionally)

Good Points:

Clipper is a very simple application. Imagine you have something on ‘copy’ but you need to copy something else; what do you do? Clipper allows you to save your text, so you can come back to it later.

We like how you can have multiple texts saved, which makes it easier.

You can also edit the text you have saved which makes things useful if you have spelling mistakes present.

One main point needed to be made is that it can import and export text to your SD card, which means if you want to save a URL of something you found on your phone, you can export it to your SD card and then transfer to your computer and vise versa.

Bad Points:

The only thing that we can nit pick on is that sometimes it lags when you save something too big.

Overview:

Overall, this application is very useful and we think many of you will like it!

Overall Rating: 9 / 10

Fennec Updates For Android

Fennec Updates For Android

Fennec is the mobile version of Mozilla’s Firefox and its currently in development for Android devices, it is taking a while for them to finish it but it is looking quite promising so far though. Firefox 4’s “Tab Candy” feature and Firefox Home for iPhone snag up all of the spotlight, and probably for good reason. Most builds to date of the ambitious mobile browser have been a little buggy but they are slowly improving. A new version snooped out on Mozilla’s servers shows signs that the mobile browser is finally coming together, however. Check it out for yourself and see if the latest build of Fennec is starting to feel more like the polished Firefox mobile experience we have all been waiting for and see if you think it will replace the stock browser for you or if its just something that you wouldn’t use.

Download Fennec for Android (Last updated on the 24th July).

YouTube testing new form of embedding

YouTube testing new form of embedding

YouTube has announced that they have begun testing a new way of embedding code that would support both HTML5 and Flash.

By using “iframes,” the code will either use the Flash plugin or switch to HTML5, depending on what device or browser you are currently using.

If the video has ad overlays, or other features not yet supported by HTML5, it will force Flash, but that is the only time.

Embedded videos should now work on Android and iOS devices, which do not have Flash support yet.

YouTube Mobile already has HTML5 built-in, but now the embedded videos will work on other sites, such as when browsing one of your favourite Android sites from your smartphone or tablet.

Google might have started removing applications from the Android Market

Google might have started removing applications from the Android Market

Not to long ago a developer that goes by the name of For-Side.com Co had over 4,000 applications on the Android Market and for some reason they were all pulled. It is currently unknown if they did it themselves for some reason or if Google decided that the applications needed to be removed from the Android Market and pulled them.

Now it seems that a second developer had their applications removed as well, sowallpaper.com has had around 1,500 applications removed from the Market. There is also one more developer who now has no applications on the Android Market and they were StoneJordan.

So whats happening? Are good pulling applications from the Android Market? Three developers in a matter of a few weeks with over 6,000 tittles between them have had their applications removed. Maybe Google has finally decided on tidying up the Android Market as those applications were probably useless.

We will have to see if more developers loose their applications on the Android Market but either way I think the Android Market is a cleaner place now because of it.

Sprint gets its own tab in the Android Market

Sprint gets its own tab in the Android Market

It seems that all the Android Sprint phones are now getting a “Sprint” tab in the Android Market instead of the “Downloads” tab. It’s currently the same on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile Android phones. You can still access the downloads tab via the menu button though. I am not sure what the point of these new tabs but maybe something good will come from it (probably not though).
